Chapter 10: Ambush (Part One)
……………………….
Sunlight was falling in patches throughout the forests. Even in the midsummer’s high noon, the sunlight that could pass through the exceptionally luxuriant branches and leaves of the forest were few to see.
In the magic forest, even the edge of the forest was always cold and damp.
Thirty knights were passing through the forest in silent procession, and most of them were well-equipped in half body knight armour, halberd and about half of the knights had longbows in their back. This team of knights were precisely Rogge's "Dragon and Beauty" mercenary group.
They had marched for more than 200 miles towards the bandits occupied Fort Cyrus. With the lead of Keith who had some military experience, the mercenary group went headlong into the magic forest. It was very smooth along the way, there were not any fierce monsters.
After another day of painful march in the forest, the mercenary group was less than100 miles away from their destination.
There were many mountains around Fort Cyrus, but most of them were low hills.
Due to the remote location, lack of resources, coupled with the intentional indulgence of Orpheus, the Fort Cyrus was occupied for half a year without anyone asking any question. It was only the suffering of the surrounding common people.
But these were outdated intelligence, and Rogge and others will eventually have to rely on the map provided by Orpheus for this reconnaissance.
……………………………….
In the afternoon, the mercenary group were estimated to be less than 70 miles away from the Fort Cyrus, approaching close to the patrol range of the cavalry scouts.
Under Keith's order, the mercenaries spread and slowly moved forward in a scattered formation.
Four veteran mercenaries jumped off the horse and quickly began to search forward. A cavalry wearing a black half-body armour in the middle of the team was Rogge.
This place was the standard position for magicians to be in a formation. The little fat man was holding a short handle axe in his hand.
The short axe, adhering to the ‘hammer of war god’ which always had a gorgeous style, had beautiful lines and even make people handsome. The back of the axe was engraved with magical inscriptions. The axe handle was embedded with a rare black crystal. After seeing Rogge's appearance for the first time, Franco, whose mouth was quite vicious, said, ‘I think that short axe magician is not really funny.”
Most of the mage was immersed in the magical experiment all the year round, and exposed to all sorts of harmful substances ( for humans, the majority of the monster beast’s body parts were poisonous), their physical strength was not much, wearing the heavy helmet and armour was absolutely a big burden. Moreover, the metal was confirmed to be a big hindrance in the process of gathering mana. Even if a mage was standing motionless, wearing body armour, the probability of magic failure will exceed 50%. In a life and this, in life-and-death battle, was a huge problem.
However, for Rogge, neither of these two was a problem. His mental strength was too great and controlling that pathetic amount of mana was extremely easy.
Moreover, he does not know the reason but after his body transformed, Rogge's spiritual force was able to pass through metal and loss while accumulating mana was very small. Despite the loss, he could send use magic of Rank three. Even if he was sealed in a metal ball he could still release magic as he does normally.
…………………
Since entering the magic forest, Rogge has been frequently in the state of trance. In his eyes, everything around him often turned into a flat picture, all kinds of strange screams ringing in his ears. Rogge was dazed and looked around blankly as if he was standing in front of a huge landscape painting. He had several impulses to crush this layer of paper with his axe and to see what is behind it.
He saw Keith coming over and talking to him loudly, but he was like a fish in a water, only to see the mouth of the people moving but could not hear what was said.
Rogge shook his head hard as if he had broken a mirror, the flat world was broken. The sound, the colour returned to the world.
“Rogge! What is the matter with you? Kate shook him hard.
"I'm alright, what's the matter?" Rogge felt tired as if he had been with 10 prostitutes.
Keith stared at him for a while an said, "We found the patrol of the other side. I think we should ambush them here and catch a few people to ask."
Keith had found that the patrol was only 10 miles away from the outer edge of the forest. There were very clear horseshoe prints, a mix of old and new. In terms of quantity, it was a team of about 7-8 persons. These traces indicated that teams of the same size often pass through this path, and perhaps this small road in the forest is the path of the patrol team.
It was getting late, and the mercenaries had a rest in the forest after they had laid out the trap. In the early morning, Keith arranged a new scout for the lookout while the rest continued to rest.
The people with extremely limited military knowledge actually didn't know how to ambush. Fortunately, some of the mercenaries hired were familiar with this concept and their arrangement and layout were good.
Last night, Rogge and others discussed it overnight and felt that the patrols might not be so simple. Otherwise, the two scouts they sent would not have gone missing. However, other than strengthening the preventive measure, there was no other result in the discussion.
…………………………
After a restful night, Rogge's energy was restored. He stroked a green ring in his hand and slowly started to incant a spell. A small, and unremarkable ball of light slowly formed and gradually rose into the sky.
Rogge separated a little of his spiritual force and entered into the ball of light, and it seemed to open another field of vision.
The ball of light slowly went up in the air and started to stabilize in the air at around 10 meters. The mage’s eye spell was not very high rank and the duration was very long. It was a convenient reconnaissance spell.
However, the shortcoming was also equally prominent, and the mage needed to keep constant attention, so the mages were not able to maintain this spell during the battle.
Another shortcoming was the fluctuation of this spell was easily detected by another mage, often exposing the position of the mage. and this was often a deadly threat to the mage.
A crisp sound of birdsong came from the edge of the forest, and the mercenaries sitting on the ground jumped and entered the ambush position. The horses of the mercenaries had already been placed five miles away as the cavalry played no role in a forest battle.
Along with calm hoof, beat began to clear gradually, noble debauchees’ palm began to sweat. This was different from previous fights, this was the real thing.
Rogge did not move, thoroughly immersed in observing the surrounding through the Mage's Eye.
Of course, the premise was that he had put himself comfortably on a tree with lush foliage.
……………………..
The six patrol cavalry slowly came down the path. The cavalry was dressed in leather, wearing a knight sword, carelessly patrolling, taking and laughing, it
seems that they had not encountered any things for many days. The area of the patrol leader chest area appeared to have been painted in some kind of signs, but now they have been scrapped down.
Rogge in the tree suddenly felt a sudden palpitation, as if a poisonous snake in the dark was staring at him. Rogge immediately withdrew his spiritual force from the mage's eye, and closed his eyes, to perceive magic fluctuations around him.
Rogge with superior spiritual power immediately felt a faint source of magic two miles away from the mercenaries. When he
used the mage’s eye a moment ago, the mage had cast stealth magic to himself and was at least an intermediate-mage.
Rogge could n’t do anything, spiritual perception can only find out the general direction of the other side. The mage's eye that can crack the invisible was Rank Four magic, which he could not perform right now.
However, there will always be a way, Rogge, thought about it, and smiled darkly, taking advantage of the distance that mage was, he quickly discussed with Emmett and rapidly vanished in the magic forest as agilely as the monster beast native to the forest.
